Silver Medallion – IRB Drivers

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations. Proficiency is required in the prerequisites for this award to remain current.

Pre-Requisites

Candidates must meet ALL of the following conditions:

  • Be at least 16 years of age to commence training
  • Be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold and be currently proficient in Bronze Medallion
  • IRB Crewperson Certificate
  • Obtain their Recreational Skipper Ticket (RST)

Course Delivery

Course length estimated at about 32 - 35 hours (dependant on group size and prior knowledge/abilities). This is generally run over eight weeks and includes theory (dry) and practical (wet) sessions.

Content

Maintenance or proficiency of the Bronze Medallion award and demonstrate effective and safe driving practice and ability including

  • Parallel running
  • Figures of eight
  • Response to signals
  • Negotiation of surf as required
  • Demonstrate victim rescue
  • Awareness of Powercraft Code of Conduct
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of an IRB Driver
  • Drive an IRB, including identify the components of an IRB motor, launch an IRB safely
  • Perform emergency procedures
  • Prepare and maintain an IRB motor

This proficiency test will need to be recorded on SurfGuard as per other proficiency testing.


Proficiency Requirements

Maintenance or proficiency of the Bronze Medallion award and demonstrate effective and safe driving practice and ability annually including

  • Parallel running
  • Figures of eight
  • Response to signals
  • Negotiation of surf as required
  • Demonstrate victim rescue
  • Awareness of Powercraft Code of Conduct
  • Drive an IRB, including identify the components of an IRB motor, launch an IRB safely
  • Perform / explain emergency procedures
  • Explain the preparation and maintenance of an IRB motor

If you are maintaining your proficiency as an IRB Driver there is no requirement to maintain you IRB Crew award.
