IRB Crew

The aim of the course is to provide members with a foundation skill and knowledge to efectively crew the IRB (Inflatable Recue Boat) in Surf operations. This can provide you with the award of being a crew member or the foundation to become an IRB driver and obtain your Silver Medallion. The IRB Crew course can be run alongside the Bronze Medallion if members so desire.

The IRB Crew award is recommended for Club and SLS members who wish to progress from roles like SLS water safety personnel and basic lifesaving patrols to further training and responsibilities and possibly move on the additional award qualifications such as IRB Drivers, patrol captains or Silver and Gold Medallions.

Pre-Requisites

  • Be a financial member of an SLS club
  • Be at least 15 years of age on the final assessment date
  • Hold the Bronze Medallion award or be current and proficient in the Bronze Medallion award.

Course Delivery

Course length estimated at about 32 - 35 hours (dependant on group size and prior knowledge/abilities). This is generally run over eight weeks and includes theory (dry) and practical (wet) sessions.

Proficiency Requirements

Maintenance or proficiency of the Bronze Medallion award and demonstrate effective and safe crewing practice and ability annually including

  • Parallel running
  • Figures of eight
  • Response to signals
  • Negotiation of surf as required
  • Demonstrate victim rescue
  • Demonstrate ability to carry out a victim lift, exit, carry and lay
  • Awareness of Powercraft Code of Conduct.

This proficiency test will need to be recorded on SurfGuard as per other proficiency testing.
